Pop some tags at Granny's Attic Unique Boutique sale this weekend at PCC Fellowship Center

Apr. 26—PERU — The last items were donated Thursday and priced today for the semi-annual Granny's Attic Unique Boutique Sale at the Peru Community Church Fellowship Center, 13 Elm St.

The event will be held Saturday, April 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the corner of Routes 22 and 22B in the heart of Peru.

"We've got so many varieties of items," Barb Benkwitt, Granny's Attic coordinator, said.

"It changes every year. Really. We've more specialty antiques than we've had other years, model furniture like a treadle sewing machine and antique sitting chairs that need reupholstering. Then, there's a four-poster bed frame that was made by a gentleman named Gil Hulett, who worked at the Mason sawmill. I'm not sure of the kind of wood, it's very happy. He worked at the Mason sawmill right here in Peru and was quite well known in the area, too.

"It was used by one of the families here starting in the 1960s. It's not old, old like the 1800s. It's a little bit simple, but it's solid. It has a headboard, foot board, and then the slats and sideboards to put a mattress on."

For the antique and collectible lovers, donations ready for sale include several wooden chairs, trunks and small tables ready for restoration. Vintage tea sets from around the world, old harness bells, a candle form, and metal bait buckets are here. From kitchen ware, dishes & glassware, to holiday décor, books, toys, games & puzzles, to bed linens and blankets, to small appliances, jewelry, and original art and picture frames.

There is something for everyone, but no clothing or computers or TVs if you're looking for those items.

"We've got an old candlestick maker," Benkwitt said.

"It's got like seven towers, if you will. It's about eight inches high. It would've been how candles were made back many years ago."

Soft goods includes pillows, blankets, and throws. There are a lot of frames, pictures, original paintings, holiday décor, books, glassware, dishware, China sets, silver plates and an assortment of kitchen items.

"You name it, all sorts of stuff," Benkwitt said.

"The proceeds go to support the church programs and missions and operations, too. But for me, anyway, and I think for everybody, it's really a community fellowship type of event. We have people that are helping set things up, get to know each other better, and we get a lot of donations, not just from church people, but from people in the neighborhood, people that know somebody that know somebody.

"They kind of help them declutter. We try to keep the prices very reasonable, so that if people see something that they need or want, then they can re-purpose it."

Doors open promptly at 9 a.m. on Saturday April 27, and 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 28. Items are priced reasonably, with most half-price on Sunday, plus an additional sale of any leftovers is planned for Saturday on May 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where most everything you can fit in a shopping bag will be $2 or $3 depending on bag size.

"We get so many people that come, and they wait outside for us to open the first minutes," Benkwitt said.

"If they find some treasure, then that's great and the church can use the proceeds. We do it twice a year. It's a very community event. It's fun just to have people come in and find things. Lots of smiles is what we hope. We hope people find things to donate that helps them clear out some things, and then people find things they want and they go out with a smile and special treasures."

The Peru Community Church is celebrating over 200 years of ministry to Peru and the surrounding areas. The church is a federation of the United Methodist and Presbyterian USA Protestant denominations.

These earliest churches in Peru began in 1802-1811 (Methodist Episcopal) and 1822 (Presbyterian & Congregational). The new logo re-emphasizes Faith-Fellowship-Family found in this faith community.

Worship services are Sundays at 9 a.m. in the historic sanctuary at 12 Elm St., both in person and via Zoom. www,perucommunitychurch.com.
