It's Pond Skim Season—The Best Crashes And Skims So Far

Spring has officially sprung, and ponds across North America beckon, waiting to drag overzealous skiers toward their watery demise.

While the pond skim action is only getting started this late season, plenty of highlights, fails, and triumphs have already gone down.

Here are a few of our favorite pond skim moments so far, starting with a miscalculated backflip at Solitude Mountain Resort, Utah.

While the skier in this video couldn't quite pull the backflip around, I'm sure the crowd didn't mind. A pond skim bail is as good, if not better, to watch than a successful run. Plus, he probably got some free neti pot action out of the deal after his nose dive.

Next up is this impressive one-legged pond skim run recently spotted at Mont-Tremblant, Québec.

Full disclosure: I got a B- in French II during college, so I can't make any sense of what the announcer's saying here. However, stoke has no language barrier, so the gist is obvious enough. French-Canadian, German, American—it doesn't matter—anyone will be frothing after watching a man dressed as a Flamingo lace a pond skim on one leg.

Remember that pond skim backflip crash at Solitude? Of course you do—it was two paragraphs ago.

Well, I'm pleased to say that a Park City Mountain Resort, Utah skier did the dang thing and put a flip to their feet during the mountain's annual pond skim this month. Cue the "oohs" and "aahs."

Park City's furiously flipper was joined by an odd menagerie of characters, including a dinosaur, Mr. Incredible, and a man that, thanks to a pair of skin-tone briefs, looked suspiciously naked. Spring fever can lead to wardrobe malfunctions, I guess.

Our final skim is less about the action and more about the celebration. After sliding to success at Mammoth Mountain, California, with a textbook pond skim, one skier soaked in the crowd's infectious energy, hooting and hollering with the best of em'.

And that, folks, brings us to the end of our pond skim dalliance. Fret not, though—pond skim season is heating up (or should I say melting down?) continent-wide, so your eyeballs will have plenty to feast on in the coming weeks. Think of these videos like an appetizer—the main course is yet to come.
