Pond Skim Footage Proves Skimming Isn't As Easy As It Looks

On April 7th, Telluride Ski Resort, CO, celebrated the end of its ski season with its annual Closing Day Party at Gorrono Ranch.

The pond skim tradition ran from 12 - 2 p.m., and some high-octane footage surfaced from the event to show off some of the greatest runs (makes and splashes). Watch below.

Obviously, pond skimming differs from skiing in that you are not so far forward. Although with powder skiing, speed and a different stance are of the essence. Shane McConkey even pioneered the innovative powder ski design of the time by comparing skiing and water skiing, so perhaps there is some connection there.

However, lean too far back and you have a situation on your hands like the first clip in the above video. More a splash than a splat, having your feet slide out from under you is in no way a good time, and in this case, wet.

Speed is probably the most important aspect of pond skimming, again, just like powder. Go to slow and your skis bog down into the shallow water, and make sure your body is in tune with your skis so they are not out in front of you or behind you while you go face first.

Pond skimming, from a distance, seems like a piece of cake, but the reality is that there are many components that make it difficult.

The silver lining is that even the crashes are entertaining for the spectators gathered around the man-made pond.
