I've never believed in using primer. In my opinion, it's always been an unnecessary step in my routine. Despite the weighted claims on most primers I've tried, I've seen little difference in my makeup applications; my foundation has smoothed on and faded throughout the day all the same. But my outlook recently changed when I discovered Grown Alchemist's Anti-Pollution Primer.

The gel-like, silicone-free primer creates a silky canvas that instantly enhances my skin's pre-makeup surface tenfold. It elevates every cream and powder product I apply on top, as each one glides onto my skin more beautifully than ever before. Any large pores (and believe me, I have quite a few) are drastically minimized to the point where my skin looks filtered. Though I've yet to acquire noticeable fine lines and wrinkles, the brand claims the primer makes them drastically less noticeable, too.

Beyond its instant blurring effect, the primer also cares for your skin long term. The formulation protects against blue light and environmental aggressors that age, damage, and dry out skin. It's prebiotic-peptide complex strengthens your skin's barrier function, so your complexion is better able to retain moisture and stay plump and firm. And Ganoderma mushroom extract is rich in antioxidants that soothe inflammation, detoxify the skin, and visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles overtime.

For the best results, the brand recommends applying the product evenly across the face after moisturizer (though I've found the primer feels hydrating enough to forgo this first step.) After the primer has sunk into the skin, you can apply makeup on top, or wear the primer on it's own purely for the skin blurring effect.

I'm not alone in seeing the difference this primer can make. One Ulta shopper writes it's "perfect for large pores, and sensitive, mild rosacea prone skin." They find it absorbs excess oil throughout the day and leaves their skin "looking better than it did" before they first applied the primer.

The makeup hero is low in stock at several retailers, but you can still grab it at Ulta for $39 right now.
