Poll: Vote now for the Poughkeepsie Journal Athlete of the Week (4/18-4/24)

Several stars shined last week, particularly on the softball and baseball diamonds, with dominant pitching and some explosive offensive showings. There also were impressive performances in tennis, lacrosse and track and field, filling the poll with worthy nominees.

Last week's Athlete of the Week winner was Arlington girls lacrosse player Simone Gillette, who received 8,032 votes.

Voting will be open until 3 p.m. Tuesday. This week's nominees:

The shortstop hit four homers last week, including two in a rout of Saugerties and another in a 12-7 win over Pine Bush in the final of the FDR Tournament. DeLawder also went 3 for 4 with seven RBI in the Presidents' win over Burke Catholic last Monday.

He had two winning goals, lifting the Admirals to nail-biting victories in consecutive games last week. Ward scored with three seconds left in a 9-8 win over Byram Hills last Tuesday, and scored in overtime to beat Carmel, 8-7, on Thursday.

Andrew Speranza, Spackenkill baseball

The junior struck out all 15 batters in a five-inning perfect game to lead the Spartans in a blowout of Onteora last Wednesday. He also went 3 for 4 with three RBI in a win over Haldane.

He went 3 for 3 with a walk, a double, an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases, including a steal of home to lead Ketcham in a 9-4 win over Arlington last Friday. The catcher also threw out a runner at second base.

Hayden Tarsia, John Jay baseball

The junior struck out seven and walked two in a five-inning no-hitter last Wednesday, leading the Patriots in a 10-0 win over Mahopac.

The midfielder won 22 of 25 faceoffs and posted two goals and two assists, leading the Huskies in a 15-7 win over rival Red Hook last Thursday.

She scored five goals and had an assist to lead the Warriors in a 15-12 upset of Lakeland/Panas last Friday, the program's first victory over the longtime Westchester power.

The junior pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks for the Bombers in a 14-0 win over Millbrook. A fielding error denied her the perfect game. She also went 4 for 5 with four RBI in a win over Spackenkill.

Tyler Wang, Arlington tennis

He edged Ketcham's Chris Chippair, 7-5, 3-6, 14-12, in a marathon first singles match to lead the Admirals in a 4-3 win last Thursday.

The senior pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts in a shutout of Fox Lane last Wednesday.

Dan Maher, Marlboro track & field

He took first place and set personal-best times in the 100 meters (12.1 seconds), 400 (56.9) and long jump (17-10¾) to lead the Iron Dukes in a 95-46 win over Ellenville.
