Police officers served as prom dates for these special needs teens

There’s usually a problem when cops are called to prom, but in this case, it was all for a good cause.

As CNN reports, police officers in Greenacres, Fla., stepped up to escort several special needs students from John I. Leonard Community High School to their senior prom Saturday night. Both male and female officers from the Boynton Police Department were pictured giving their “dates” corsages and boutonnières before the dance.

The uniformed officers also hit the dance floor with the teens, with their department’s Twitter feed calling the night “turnt up.”

Scott Harris, a retired officer with the force, told West Palm Beach news affiliate WPTV that his wife’s work as a teacher at John I. Leonard helped inspire the heartwarming gesture.

“We came up with this idea of having these students come to the prom since they wouldn’t have the opportunity if we didn’t take the chance and bring them here,” Harris said.

“It’s amazing to see these young kids … to be here today,” he added. “They are awesome kids and now they are mingling with the other kids, doing the same thing that kids that don’t have disabilities are doing.”
