Police escort teen daughter of late sergeant to first day of school

A police department stood in for a fallen fellow officer when it came time to drop off his teenage daughter at her first day of eighth grade on Monday.

In November 2018, the Miami Beach police department mourned the death of Sgt. Larry Marrero, who passed away while on duty. Marrero had suffered a fatal heart attack while participating in the department's physical fitness program at police headquarters. He served with the Miami Beach police department for 28 years, and was posthumously promoted from detective to sergeant.

Marrero, who was only 58, is survived by his wife and two children — including Demi, a teen who now has to navigate her last year of middle school without her father.

That's when Marrero’s "extended family" at the Miami Beach police department stepped in.

"Today is Demi’s first day of 8th grade. Demi’s dad, MBPD Sergeant Larry Marrero passed away last year and isn’t here to take his daughter to school," Miami Beach Police Department shared on their Facebook page. "The Marrero’s extended family at the MBPD stepped in and made sure Demi and her mom had a special day."

The gesture touched members of the community, and they publicly thanked the officers in the comment section of the post.

"We live in Miami Beach part time. You all are the finest around. The work you do is tremendous (Community Outreach included!)," one person commented. "We could not be more proud. Best of luck to Demi in 8th grade. Looks like she is starting the year off right! Kudos to the MBPD!!!"

"This was a great gesture and she will remember this for ever. Thank you for making this young lady feel special and not forgotten," another wrote.

"She is glowing. You can see she feels loved. This is what today's kids need," one person shared. "To be loved and to give love back."

Miami Beach police department did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment.
