Former NFL player Sergio Brown remains missing as his mother was found unresponsive near a creek by her home in the Chicago suburb of Maywood. She has been confirmed dead.

Police located her body on Saturday evening following a search for the missing 73-year-old and her 35-year-old son.

According to CBS News, Myrtle Brown was located about “100 yards from her home.”

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said in an email to NBC News that her death was being treated as a homicide as she was killed by “multiple injuries due to assault.”

Her son, who previously played for the Buffalo Bills, is still missing with police asking anyone with information to come forward by calling the Maywood Police, local law enforcement, or anonymously at 708-450-1787.

Myrtle’s son, Nick Brown, shared a heartfelt tribute to his mother on Sunday via Facebook during which he also asked his brother to come home safely.

“It's a sad but hopeful time, and we will all get through this together," he wrote. "Mom always told me, 'tough times don’t last' and our last conversation about tough times being temporary is my beacon of hope.”

He continued: “Mom, thank you for being strong, caring, diligent, fancy, funny, and for saving my art. I won’t let you down. My brother Sergio is still missing. If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home.”

He warned the public not to “approach the property” as it is “still an ongoing investigation.”

Myrtle’s death came as a shock to her neighbors, as Carlos Cortez told CBS News that she was “an outstanding woman, and I'm hoping she's in the right place and she's with God.”

“I never would've expected this in a million years. You only watch this on TV. And to know this happened next door, it's a tragedy,” Cortez continued, noting that he last saw the mother and son in person on Thursday.

However, his Ring camera footage also captured him “taking out the trash, and they seen him have a bonfire where he burned all her clothes," Cortez revealed.

He also claimed family members informed him that the former NFL player wasn’t “himself” the past few months.

Prior to his retirement in 2017, Sergio, who played for Notre Dame and signed with the New England Patriots in 2010, also played for the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars in numerous positions such as defensive back, free safety and strong safety.
