Plucking eyebrows is nobody's favorite activity - the pinching, the pain, and the eye watering are all unpleasant enough to make you want to give up halfway through. Fortunately, there are a few techniques that help make this grooming chore a little less unpleasant.

1. Pluck after a shower.

Just as is the case with shaving, it's best to pluck after you've opened up your hair follicles via hot water. If you don't have to time to jump in the shower before plucking, you can achieve a similar effect by holding a hot, wet washcloth along your brows and letting it sit for a minute or two.

2. Use a new pair of tweezers.

Are your tweezers dull, hard to squeeze, or even a little rusted? Toss 'em and get a new pair. Using an old pair of tweezers can make it difficult to grab hairs, making you more likely to accidentally slip and snag your skin.

3. Grab hairs at the base and pull in the direction they grow.

As unpleasant as it is to pluck your brows, it's even worse to pull on them multiple times. If you grab the hair towards the end or pull it in the wrong direction, it can break, and you may need to give that same hair another try to get it all the way out. Instead, aim your tweezers for the root and pull in the same direction your hairs grow.

4. When in doubt, less is more.

It's tempting to go pluck-crazy once you've already begun shaping your brows, but it's better to save yourself some time, pain, and possible unevenness by sticking to a minimal hair removal regimen. If you aren't sure where to pluck, consult an eyebrow expert on your individual face's best brow shape.

5. Apply aloe vera after.

If your face feels irritated after you're done, apply a little aloe vera gel to soothe it. There's a reason dermatologists swear by this beauty ingredient: It's a great way to cool down your skin after it's been stressed out by hair removal.
