Paris Games Week PlayStation Media Showcase recap | The Last of Us Part 2, Destiny 2, Monster Hunter beta

Sony's PlayStation showcase at Paris Games Week saw updates on many of its upcoming games

It was expected that the PlayStation Media Showcase at Paris Games Week would be someone small, with few major announcements or teasers. Not so, apparently, as a lot of games had brand new trailers revealed, as well as release windows and new details announced. As there were so many, let's get right down to it.

Destiny 2

Perhaps the most pertinent news is that Destiny 2 is getting a new expansion, Curse of Osiris, in just a few weeks. It's bringing along a new campaign, new raid content, and a trailer shows off the planet you'll be visiting for it, Mercury. Full details on exactly what's to come are likely to come out in the very near future, given its release date is just on the horizon.

Detroit: Become Human

A new Detroit: Become Human trailer also came out, in all its very David Cage/Quantic Dream-ness. It's all about the concept of being human as a robot in a future world where humans and robots co-exist, with this trailer showing off the choices you can make to change the story. It's a pretty brutal one, though, with scenes of domestic abuse and overall themes on the topic. It looks like Detroit: Become Human is going to be tackling some rough stuff.

The Last of Us Part 2

Similarly, the new trailer for The Last of Us Part 2 is brutal and hard to watch. Showing a contextless cutscene, it features Ellie from the first game all grown up,and about to be murdered and gutted for an unknown reason. The person who comes to help is then held down as her arms are broken with a few swift swings of a hammer. It's been receiving negative reactions since, because, well, it's the most brutal and horrible thing shown at the PlayStation Media Showcase.

Shadow of the Colossus

This remake for Shadow of the Colossus isn't coming out until next year, and there's no release date or window more specific than that, this new title is looking pretty swish. The new trailer for it at the PlayStation Media Showcase did little more than show some new footage of the landscape, and the protagonist, Wander, strolling through them on horseback, but it is evidence of how much the game's visuals needed an overhaul for this remaster. It looks great, although we've yet to see quite how much of the game is changed with relation to gameplay.

Ghost of Tsushima

Sucker Punch, developers behind the Infamous series, have been working on something new for a while now: Ghost of Tsushima. Set in what appears to be late 13th century Japan (specifically Tsushima island), you must master the way of the Ghost to fight back against a Mongol invasion as one of the last of the samurai, after the Mongols have beaten and defeated almost all Japanese forces. It's a cutscene trailer, so we didn't see how the game plays, but it's likely to be a third person, open world action RPG.

Monster Hunter World

The key thing from the Monster Hunter World trailer is that there's going to be a beta for the game, coming to PS4 December 9. The exact details on how to get in, what it includes, and how long it's running for are unconfirmed, as there's more than a month to go until that, but it does mean you'll (probably) get to play Monster Hunter World before the year is out.

On top of that, there's a collaboration with Horizon: Zero Dawn, where you can play as its protagonist, Aloy, on PS4. There's Horizon: Zero Dawn inspired weapons and armour, and while the way to get those hasn't been confirmed, previous events in the Monster Hunter series like this have often come through free DLC at launch.

Marvel's Spider Man

Insomniac games have made some truly brilliant games. The next franchise they're taking their hand to is the superhero genre, with a somewhat dark and 'mature' story that looks like Insomniac are trying to do to Spider-Man what Rocksteady Studios did to Batman in Arkham Asylum. The new trailer is a cinematic one, rather than anything too flashy in the game, unfortunately, so we'll just have to wait for more to find out if it's actually going to be any good.

Far Cry 5

Something to look forward to next year is Far Cry 5, the latest Far Cry game and the first to take the series into a modern America, where the enemy is, seemingly, in your own back garden. What the new trailer shows, though, is the game's take on co-op, with a much more open co-op system than previous Far Cry games, one that's similar to that found in Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands. It looks like utter chaos.
