Playoffs, Mother’s Day and more things to do in Denver this weekend

DENVER (KDVR) — Scattered showers will move across Denver throughout the weekend along with snow in the mountains. While this won’t be Denver’s warmest weekend, many summer activities are still set to start.

Make sure to bring your raincoat if you’re heading out to one of these events this weekend.

Drive-in theater

The Denver metro’s only drive-in theater is opening this Friday for possibly the last season ever. They’re playing a double feature of “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” and “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.”

88 Drive-In Theater announced that they wanted to step away from the business and “go in a different direction.” While it’s not for sure the last season, the owners are looking at different options for the lot.

Round 2 playoffs

The Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche are both in the second round of playoffs with games this weekend. The Avs are playing the Dallas Stars this Saturday at Ball Arena.

Nuggets came back from a 2-game deficit in ’94, but can they do it again?

Meanwhile, the Nuggets face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday and Sunday as they try to come back from a 2-0 deficit. While the Nuggets aren’t playing at home, you can catch watch parties all over the city.

Farmers markets open

Farmers markets around the Mile High City are finally starting to open. Last weekend, farmers markets in Cherry Creek, as well as markets at South Pearl Street and City Park opened up.

This weekend, the University Hills Farmers Market will open for the first time this season on Saturday. Other markets in the area will also be opening this weekend.

Free concert

Starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Riverfront Park is hosting a free music festival called Golden Hours. The artists performing include Hazel English, Flaural, Frail Talk, Destiny Shynelle and more. The concert goes until 8 p.m. and you don’t need tickets, just show up.

Kite festival

There’s a Japanese Kite Festival at Rotella Park where you can either bring your own kite or make a new one with Edo Kite Master Mikio Toki, whose visiting Denver from Japan. The festival takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Mother’s Day

Establishments all over Denver are hosting Mother’s Day brunches and other gatherings on Sunday. Some brunches include dining at FIRE, Guard and Grace, Range Restaurant and many more. You could also try out an activity, like the Mother’s Day Weekend at Oakwell Beer Spa. There are also free events, like Mom’s Free Day at Wings Over the Rockies or the Mother’s Day Market on Saturday near Washington Park.

If you’re leaving the house this weekend, check the weather. It’s supposed to rain in the metro and snow in the mountains, making it a wet weekend.
