It was recently revealed that legendary (and often controversial) video game director Hideki Kamiya would be leaving PlatinumGames, 15 years after having helped found the company in 2007. Kamiya’s departure came as a bit of a shock, and left fans wondering what would happen to future games from Platinum that the director had a hand in. One of those games was Project GG — and it’s not looking great for the future of the project.

In a response to a person on Twitter (via VGC) asking what the future of Project GG holds, Kamiya said that people should “ask Platinum about Platinum,” suggesting that he may no longer be involved in the game. Without Kamiya’s involvement, the game may not even happen at all, given it was something of a passion project for the director.

For those out of the loop, Project GG was to be the third in a trilogy of superhero games headed up by Kamiya. The first two games – Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101 – weren’t particularly big hitters, but gathered a dedicated fanbase both within Japan and outside of it.

Project GG was supposed to be a much bigger game, both in terms of budget and in theming. It was said to be focused on one superhero able to transform into a large hero to fight against monsters, along the lines of Ultraman or other similar tokusatsu series.

Kamiya’s departure from the studio doesn’t necessarily mean the end for Project GG, as PlatinumGames could continue work on it without him. Current CEO of PlatinumGames Atsushi Inaba was listed as the game’s producer when the project was announced, and previously worked on Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101 with Kamiya, so it’s possible Inaba will continue development without Kamiya’s involvement.

No other future PlatinumGames projects have been announced outside of Project GG, so it’s unknown what other games could be affected by Kamiya’s departure. No matter how you slice it, though, it does seem like Kamiya and PlatinumGames have a little bit of bad blood between them. With any luck, they’ll be able to overcome that, and Project GG will see the light of day.
