Planting a tree for Arbor Day? You could get a seedling at Columbia Farmers Market
Looking to plant a tree for Arbor Day on April 26? Columbia Parks and Recreation can help you prepare.
The department, in partnership with the city's TreeKeepers volunteer group, the city's Tree Board and the Columbia Farmers Market will host a seedling giveaway starting 8 a.m. April 20 at the MU Health Care Pavilion, 1769 W. Ash St., during that morning's farmers market.
Two seedlings per person will be distributed as supplies last. Seedling options include:
American beautyberry
Bald cypress
Black walnut
Blackberry
Bur oak
Chinkapin oak
Hazelnut
Kentucky coffeetree
Ninebark
Pecan
Persimmon
Pitch loblolly pine
Redbud
Serviceberry
River birch
Swamp white oak
The city holds Arbor Day events each year as part of its designation as a Tree City USA, bestowed by the National Arbor Day Foundation to honor the city's commitment to a forestry program. Columbia meets all designation requirements: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance.
More information about the tree giveaway is available by calling Parks and Recreation at 573-874-7460.
