What to plant in May in Central Pennsylvania

PENNSYLVANIA (WHTM) – The unofficial start of garden season is almost here.

Many gardeners in Zone 7a consider Mother’s Day, which is Sunday, May 12, the beginning of the gardening season. The threat of frost will be gone, and cold-sensitive plants will be ready to get in the ground.

Here’s what can be planted in May in Central Pennsylvania and Zone 7a:

  • Tomatoes

  • Peppers

  • Corn

  • Frost-tender vegetables, herbs and flowers that were started inside can be hardened off and moved outside by the second week of May

  • Sunflowers, nasturtiums, marigolds, borage, basil and other warm season flowers and herbs

Here’s how to have the best growing season

Here’s what can be started inside:

  • Okra

  • Squash

  • Cucumbers

  • Melons

  • Watermelons

If the weather is favorable, beans, okra, squash, sweet corn, Southern peas, asparagus beans and watermelon can be planted outside.

Usually by the second week of May it is safe to plant almost everything outside. Houseplants can be moved outside as well.
