Pirelli Calendar 2020: Behind The Scenes

The evolution of the Pirelli calendar—the annual publication which infamously featured scantily clad models in rather questionable poses since its inaugural issue in 1964—has become a remarkable success story since its total and uncompromising shift in creative direction towards reflecting today's zeitgeist. The 2016 issue made headlines around the world for casting women who were pin-ups for very different reasons: inspirational and successful female heroes from the worlds of art, music, film, sport, politics and business (from Patti Smith to Serena Williams). Following this progressive trend, the 2020 Pirelli calendar, shot by Paolo Roversi features actors and singers of different cultures and countries and takes its cue from Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet. Roversi chose nine personalities to interpret the role of Juliet, including British actors Claire Foy, Mia Goth and Emma Watson, American actors Indya Moore, Yara Shahidi and Kristen Stewart (our September cover star), the Chinese singer Chris Lee, the Spanish singer Rosalía, and the Franco-Italian artist Stella Roversi.
