  • Pink opened up about a near-death experience she had at age 16.

  • The incident happened at a rave on Thanksgiving in 1995.

  • The singer explained the drug-related incident that almost claimed her life.

In a celebrity culture that often prioritizes privacy and secrecy, Pink is an open book, she told Cecilia Vega in a 60 Minutes interview. And that includes divulging details of a near-death health scare that happened when she was 16.

It was Thanksgiving in 1995—at the time, she was a self-described “punk.” “I had a mouth. I had a chip on my shoulder,” she said. “Basically I grew up in a house where every day my parents were screaming at each other, throwing things. They hated each other.” In an attempt to escape that environment, she admitted to selling and doing drugs.

And on that Thanksgiving Day, she attended a rave. “I was at a rave and I overdosed,” she said. “I was on ecstasy, angel dust, crystal, all kinds of things. Then I was out. Done. Too much.” Vega chimed in: “You almost died,” she said. Pink responded: “Yeah.”

The moment served as a wake-up call and a pivotal time for the now 44-year-old. She stopped using “hard drugs,” she said, and weeks later, secured her first record deal with the R&B group, Choice.

Pink has previously opened up about her overdose experience and how it changed her. “I remember getting up off the floor in the morning, and that was the last time I ever touched a drug again,” she told Shape in 2012, per Entertainment Weekly.

Now, she sticks to wine—she owns and operates her own vineyard, per 60 Minutes. And 28 years later, she continues to do what she loves: performing. She’s spent the summer touring her latest album, Trustfall—often joined by her husband Carey Hart and their two kids—and just last week, she shared another health update with fans after having to postpone a set of shows in Tacoma and Vancouver.

“I am deeply sorry to share that I have a respiratory infection and my doctor has advised that I am unable to perform,” she wrote on Instagram. “In the meantime, I wish everyone good health and am sending lots of love.” In September, she postponed a show in Dallas due to a sinus infection.

Hopefully, the singer can finish the year strong and healthy.
