A Pink Fireplace Isn’t Even the Boldest Part of This Living Room Redo

Most extreme maximalists don’t move into homes or apartments that already come color-fied to their liking; instead, they more often start with something neutral (or close to it). It can take a lot of DIY work to fill those blank spaces with all the hallmarks of maximalist design, like punchy patterns, bright colors, and lots and lots of accessories.

Marina Porter is one of those self-described maximalism-to-the-max homeowners (check out her multicolor bathroom redo here and her playful, colorful bungalow tour here) whose home was once “very neutral.”

The previous homeowners had gone with gray walls, gray flooring, and a navy fireplace interior that wasn’t quite a style fit for Marina or her husband, Alexander Arseneau. But they’d also knocked down a wall separating the dining room and living room to create one large open space, which was very much something Marina and Alexander wanted. Knowing that they had a layout they liked and just needed to add some custom touches, Marina and Alexander’s goal was “to make the home [their] happy place with items and murals that bring [them] joy.”
