A dozen teens and young adults learned to express themselves with a camera. Local youth organization New Day partnered with the national program Pictures of Hope to give young people cameras, encouraging them to showcase their hopes and dreams through photography.

“We want to capture something that says this is about how I feel my hopes and what my dreams are and having that tangible thing to say it’s pretty powerful,” said Brooke Tafoya, Chief Executive Officer of New Day New Mexico

“Hopes and dreams of having my own business in photography,” said Shaw.

They say this program is to inspire teens and young adults struggling with housing or other challenges, to pursue their goals.

“Many of our young people who we work with are unstably housed or are currently living on the streets that creates some precarious times getting to one place can be challenging so we are grateful for the turn out and the young people who are suppose to be here,” said Tafoya.

Along with getting their own camera to keep, the participants also got tips from award-winning journalist Linda Solomon, who hosts this program around the country.”I do want to be a photographer but with the things I’ve been going through personally and having this opportunity it helps me lift my spirits up,” said Shaw.

The group from Friday will have an exhibition on May 9 at the Albuquerque Museum.
