Photo of an Unlikely Friendship Between a Cat and a Tortoise Goes Viral
If there’s one thing we can all agree upon, it’s that cute pictures of animals can sometimes turn a bad day into a good one — or at the very least, put a smile on your face. It’s why photos of puppies often go viral for no reason other than, well, they’re adorable! And what’s cuter than two unlikely pets becoming BFFs? Not a whole lot, TBH.
That’s why when one Twitter user posted a photo of his pet cat and tortoise lounging and sharing a meal together, the post quickly went viral — and others soon chimed in with sweet pictures of their own.
The whole thing started when Karl Kuehn took to social media to share a photo of his cat, Hamberton (Ham for short) and his tortoise, Tortie. The 28-year-old tells Teen Vogue that Tortie has lived with him for a little over a year, and he welcomed Ham into his family this summer when the cat showed up on his porch during a thunderstorm. Surprisingly, “Ham is obsessed with Tortie,” Karl says. And it seems as though the feeling might be mutual. “Now that Tortie’s inside for the winter, he’s basically always checking in on her,” he adds.
Cue all the “aww”’s imaginable, right? But according to Karl — who also owns two other cats and a dog in his North Carolina residence — Ham and Tortie are still warming up to each other, despite the otherwise adorable picture. “They don’t cuddle or anything, at least not yet,” he says. Here’s hoping some kitty and tortoise snuggles are in their future!
The responses to Karl’s tweet prove that opposites definitely attract, and that friendship can be found in the most surprising of places. One person shared a picture of their dog and bunny enjoying a snack, while another weighed in with a photo of a cute pup and his iguana BFF. There were plenty more cats and tortoises, dogs and tortoises, dogs and ferrets, and even a cat and…an ankle boot. I mean, why not? Who said a feline and fashionable footwear can’t be friends?
