These Phone Cases are The Secret to a Supermodel Selfie

On the first day of 2020, Kaia Gerber welcomed the new decade with an Erewhon sweater (yes, really), a pink toothbrush (mid-brush), a pair of black Ray-Bans (worn inside), and an iPhone case featuring Adam Driver’s tongue (his face was also present). These weren’t the contents of her bag or everything sprawled out on her desk, but the four essential elements that made up her first selfie of the year — one worthy of 303,708 likes.

Nearly a month earlier, Bella Hadid ended the decade with a bourbon neat, no clothing, and a Moschino iPhone case — 1,624,829 likes. Supermodel selfies, they really have the range.

And as the Instagram audience’s interest shifts from flawless perfection to sincerity and authenticity, a point Instagram’s Head of Fashion Partnerships Eva Chen has stressed for months, we’re about to see more of these selfies, toothbrushes and lingerie in all. More often than not, these photos get more engagement or likes than professional editorial shots celebrities and models share online. But what makes us like Instagram selfies celebrities take so much?

We’re pretty sure it’s something that’s predisposed. A blessed side effect of winning the genetic lottery. That, and the fact that they have a team of professional makeup artists, hair stylists, and personal trainers behind them. And since they’re on set so often, they are way more likely to be around very good lighting at any given time. But after looking at hundreds of celebrity mirror selfies, I’ve noticed there’s a very key element we’re not talking about nearly enough: iPhone cases.

Like the desire to take a selfie every time we catch our reflection in the nearest mirror, iPhone cases confirm we’re human — albeit accident-prone ones who don’t want to pay for that dreaded screen replacement. iPhone cases do more than protect phones, too. They dress the accessory we undeniably use the most. We may put down our bag every now and then, but we’re on our phones practically every second of every day. Personally, I clutch onto mine like it’s my firstborn and I’m not going to dress my baby in just anything. Celebrities clearly feel the same.

From designer cases that are surprisingly affordable to cases that’ll draw more attention than the actual selfie itself, below are the four different kinds of phone cases the world’s most Instagrammable can’t stop using.

For When You Need an Extra Accessory for Your Outfit: Designer iPhone Cases

Designer iPhone cases are often the most affordable thing you can buy from any individual high-end brand. Moschino iPhone cases are the most popular amongst supermodels everywhere and they typically cost around $50. As Bella Hadid demonstrates, if you feel like your outfit is missing, uhm, a little something, a designer case adds an extra element. Plus, it’ll elevate any selfie because, well, it’s designer.

For When You Want to Upset Your Significant Other or Stan Your Celeb Crush (or Both): Customizable iPhone Cases

Kaia Gerber looks just like her supermodel mom, but with every passing day she’s resembling her new boyfriend, Pete Davidson, more and more. Despite how serious the two are getting, the supermodel clearly isn’t afraid to show everyone she’s just as obsessed with Adam Driver as the rest of us. Whether you want a photo of him and his tongue or another photo entirely, customizable cases are the way to go. And if you’re the indecisive type, a clear phone case is perfect for slipping polaroids, magazine cut-outs, or printed photos in and out of.

For When You Want Your Outfit (or Lack Thereof) to Speak for Itself: Subtle iPhone Cases

When it comes to adjectives that describe Kendall Jenner, most people wouldn’t use the word subtle. This is the girl who rode in on a horse while dressed as a gold fairy for her birthday party in November. But with looks so elaborate, it makes sense why Jenner’s iPhone cases practically blend into her photos. She keeps it low key so the outfit can do the talking. And as for all the times where her outfit wasn’t really an outfit at all? Same idea. If you’re going to take a selfie in a bathtub you might as well go for it, right?
