Philipp Plein RTW Fall 2021

What does Philipp Plein, a master of fashion spectacles, do when there’s no physical runway? He hires an artist-animator he met on Instagram, and his hero, Snoop Dogg, to make a psychedelic video with cartoon gorillas, gold skeletons, puffers and sneakers springing to life, dancing and striding across a fantasy version of Milan’s Piazza del Duomo to Snoop’s tune “Drop It Like It’s Hot.”

The look: A buzzy mash-up of up puffers, tracksuits, hoodies, skinny minidresses, denim and sequin-slicked eveningwear awash in dazzling colors and prints. Rainbow tie-dye, camouflage and animal prints jostle alongside Looney Tunes’ Bugs Bunny and Tweetie Bird and — weirdly — a blue toile de jouy, which Plein said reminded him of the Laura Ashley prints of his childhood.

Quote of note: “I wanted to give summer feelings to the winter collection, and to design for the future — the future is bright.” Of the video, he said it was something “we wouldn’t do normally, something people can only watch on-screen. I wanted to think happy.”

Standout pieces: Rainbow tie-dye and Bugs Bunny print minidresses with a sporty edge and little thumb loops to keep the long sleeves in place; a gold sequinedtuxedo-and-tracksuit combo; denim jackets with cartoon character patches and toile de jouy covered puffers, high-top sneakers and even a Rolls-Royce.

Takeaway: The video — and the collection — offered a much needed jolt of energy, and positivity, in these grim days of lockdown.
