Philadelphia Zoo Hippos Chowing Down on Whole Pumpkins Have Visitors Captivated

In an adorably terrifying video from the Philadelphia Zoo posted on October 13, hippos Cindy and Una are shown getting into the spooky season by chowing down on some pumpkins to celebrate the start of the annual Boo at the Zoo.

The TikTok account for @phlbucketlist shared the adorable, chompy video and viewers love hippopotamuses Cindy and Una. @Caitlyn comments, "I know Una! I fed her a head of lettuce once. Magical. Glad she’s doing good and eating pumpkins." She's just loving her best life! @Cailin adds, "The pumpkins look so small in their mouths."

We weren't the only ones reminded of the childhood board game Hungry, Hungry Hippos and @Ray replies, "Fairly certain you're supposed to use giant white marbles." Evan responds, "It's amazing how effortless it is for them. That jaw strength is insane." That's very true, because The bite force of a hippo is estimated to be one of the most powerful among animals. Studies have suggested that a fully grown hippo can exert a bite force of up to 2,000 pounds per square inch.

Be really glad you aren't a pumpkin!

From the Philadelphia Zoo, During Boo at the Zoo, guests will have the opportunity to celebrate Halloween in costume trick or treating among their favorite zoo animals. The event will be filled with lots of candy, seasonal decor, pumpkin feedings, and more. The dates for Boo at the Zoo will be October 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29, 2023, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
