Pets as kids? The controversial debate
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — It hasn’t been unusual to see dogs dressed up or even in strollers these days.
People choosing pets over having kids has even caught the Pope’s attention. Like kids, pets can be expensive in more ways than one.

Over the last few decades, a dog hasn’t only been considered as man’s best friend: they’re family.
Some will go to great lengths to keeping their pup as healthy as possible. With grooming and vet bills, this could be a costly process.
Some breeds have more health problems than others, so pet insurance is highly recommended.
According to MarketWatch, French Bulldogs are the most popular dog in the Nation.
Over their lifetime, their costs from vet bills and other expenses add up to over $16,000.
Think that is too expensive?
Golden Retrievers have them beat as their expenses add up to over $23,000 over their lifetime.
“Taking care of a pet can have similar costs as caring for a child. You have to regimen your life– whether you have to constantly take care of them with feeding and playing and grooming, a whole bunch of different things. And they’re also a lifetime commitment they’re not just an accessory. If you adopt a pet you should be making sure that they have their forever home,” Claudia Phillips, Works Alongside MarketWatch Guides.

Pets can also fill several voids in everyday life.
Clinical Psychologist Dr. Corey Gonzales, accompanied by his dog Holly-Coco, appeared on 17 News at Sunrise earlier this month where he shared some advice on how to cope with depression.
“For patients that I have with clinical depression, I recommend them to get a pet. Because a pet gives them companionship, their tactical needs, their love, and it takes them out in the sun. They walk, they socialize. Huge benefits of having a pet!”
So are pets… kids? Depends on who you ask.
Kids eventually move away, and some folks have issues having children.
Pets, especially dogs, provide owners with a sense of purpose according to experts.
