Petersen Museum Hosts A New Automotive Art Exhibit

The Petersen Automotive Museum has announced its latest exhibit which promises to be one of its most imaginative yet. Called “Eyes on the Road: Art of the Automotive Landscape” its purpose is to explore the bold frontier area where art, car-centered spaces, and concept cars overlap. This promises to be an experience gearheads and art fans can revel in alike.

Among the items which will be on display, according to the museum, are various concept cars as well as art pieces from the great Andy Warhol, Ed Ruscha, and David Hockney.

In the exhibit will be five sections: vehicle concepts, sign language, at the pump, highways, and street art. Visitors will journey through each one and enjoy a unique fusion of art, car culture, and experimental automobiles.

As one might guess, the vehicle concepts section will be full of concept cars, but not just any. They will be rare and especially fantastical, all hailing from the 1930s and 1950s when designers often shot for the stars, sometimes literally.

Among those concept cars will be the 1934 Dymaxion, 1956 American Motors Astra-Gnome, 1955 Ghia Gilda, and 1969 Chevrolet Astro III.

The sign language section will showcase road signs from across the country, only interpreted through the creative lens of contemporary artists. At the pump will feature pieces from artists Ruscha and Vik Muniz, plus Warhol’s famous “Mobil Gas.”

Finally, the street art section will display works of art from Mr. Brainwash, plus showcase “Freeway Box” by Steve O’Loughlin as well as “Third Street” by Larry Yust.

“This exhibit represents the fusion of artistic expression, automotive ingenuity and observation of the motoring environment,” said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges. “It also perfectly illustrates how artists can reveal the beauty hidden in plain sight throughout the world in which we drive.”

“Eyes On the Road: Art of the Automotive Landscape” will be on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum starting on March 30.
