The Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary in Bowersville is assisting an Elbert County woman with finding homes for a surplus of small-breed piglets.

The woman needed help with an accidental overbreeding situation, according to Michelle Van Dusen, who is a member of a board of directors for the sanctuary.

“We’re getting them spayed and neutered and helping with the adoption process,” Van Dusen said Friday.

The female piglets will be spayed Sunday. "So once they are healed, they should be ready to go to loving homes,” she said about the 32 piglets.

Corrine Baker, a co-founder of the sanctuary, went to the farm in March and found more than 50 pigs and piglets that needed veterinary care and the owner needed help with the adoption process, according to the sanctuary.

“Male piglets can impregnate female pigs at a very young age, and Outsiders knew without stepping in, the amount of pigs could soon triple,” according to the site.

The sanctuary has applied for a grant to assist with the cost of spaying and neutering.

The pigs were described as Kune Kune, a breed popular as pets due to their coloring, mild temperament, and intelligence.

Piglets must be adopted in pairs, unless the person already has a pig at home that can be a companion.

There is no adoption fee, but a donation to the sanctuary’s spay and neuter program is appreciated.

An adoption application must be completed. For more information go to www.outsidersfarm.com.
