Raccoons are usually lurking around restaurants or garbage cans, scrounging up any leftovers they can get. Since they're used to being around humans, it is believed that raccoons have evolved a tolerance for being around people. Hence why now you'll see people with pet raccoons in some states.

As much as we would love to own a pet raccoon running around our house, they're not legal in every state. The states were it is legal are Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Other states might allow special permits to keep one. That's how this family has been able to keep Tully. They're located in Texas, where it is illegal, but they were able to get a permit to rehabilitate Tully since she is special needs.
If you live in one of the lucky states that gives the green light to keep a raccoon, you should ready for the commitment as raccoons have long life expectancies. These animals can live as long, or longer, than a medium-sized dog - 15 to 20 years. And those long years aren't always a walk in the park like it seems in this clip. Raccoons are known to be destructive and moody as they get older.
