Pet Patrol: What you need in emergency kits for an evacuation

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Hurricane season officially starts on June 1, but officials say now is the time to get ready for any potential storms.

The Carolinas are no stranger to tropical systems, and in the event of an evacuation, key items to have in an emergency kit include batteries, food, water, flashlights, important documents and medication. However, your emergency plan should also include the care of your pets.

Emergency kits for pets should be accessible and include their food and water. Food should be stored in an airtight container, and the kit should have travel bottles or collapsible bowls.

Leashes, harnesses and carriers are also needed to transport your pets safely and to make sure they don’t run away.

If your pets eat canned food, make sure to have an opener. Your kit for your pets should also include medications and medical records in case they need to be boarded. You should also make sure your pet is up to date on vaccines and has identification and contact information on their collar. Your veterinarian’s phone number might also be useful.

If boarding your pets is not an option during an evacuation, then the best thing to do is map out pet-friendly hotels and shelters along your route. Public officials will provide route information a few days before a storm arrives.

Once you know which way you’re going, call ahead to the hotel and make a reservation. If they are not pet-friendly, you can also ask them to make an exception.

It’s also important to note that American Red Cross shelters cannot accept pets because of health and safety concerns.

Lastly, bring along your pet’s favorite toys, blankets, treats or even an extra piece of your clothing with your scent on it to help comfort them.
