In today's weird-but-fascinating beauty news: The key to discovering the perfect shade of nude lipstick is to take a long, hard peep at your — wait for it — nipples. Yep, you read that correctly.

According to the experts of The Doctors, the daytime medical-related talk show on NBC, an untapped and certainly unconventional way of tracking down a lipstick shade that complements your skin tone and blends into the natural hue of your lips is to find a shade that matches the color of your areolas. "Nature knows best," claimed the docs. Fascinating.

Unconvinced, we reached out to celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern for her expert opinion on the, ahem, nip tip. (Un)surprisingly, Stern hasn't actually given the technique a try IRL, but she does admit it's certainly a "creative" way to nail down a lip tone naturally complementary to your complexion.

"Generally, when I'm choosing a nude in a more traditional fashion, I choose a color that is either one shade darker than my natural skin tone or one shade lighter than my natural skin tone," Stern tells Allure. "In doing this, I never feel too washed out, as the nude color on the lips doesn't match the skin exactly. If the [lipstick] color is too close to the skin color, it can have a deadening effect."

Whether or not you use your assets as a guide to locating your perfect nude, Elizabeth Tanzi, founder and director of Capital Laser & Skin Care and associate clinical professor, department of dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center, points out that your nipple won't always be the same shade for the rest of your life. "Changing estrogens and hormones can affect nipple color through the years," she tells Allure.

So there you have it: Yes, you can technically find a nude lipstick shade using your nipple hue as a guide, but it won't always be the same color. Instead, you might want to follow this helpful guide in the meantime.
