Some call it science, some call it a myth, but we've all heard about how certain hair colors only work on specific skin tones. The thing is, there are no rules per se — after all, coloring hair is is a form of expression to show your personality. However, depending on your skin tone, some hair hues can amp up the warmth factor while others can make you look washed out. With an endless array of colors out there to choose from, we get it: not an easy task! To start off, you’ll need to determine your skin tone. “Hold a white piece of paper to your face and look into a mirror,” says Cassondra Kaeding, a colorist at Mare Salon who works with Rooney Mara and Olivia Munn. “If you see a hue of yellow, blue-red or rose pink, you have a warm skin tone. If your skin appears grey, blueish-red, yellow-green (olive), then you have a cool skin tone.” If you land somewhere in the middle, your skin tone is neutral and fortunately, every hair color works on you. The paler your skin tone, the lighter you can go. The darker your skin tone, the more pigment you’ll need in your hair color to balance it out. Next up, let's break things down color by color.
