Outdoor gear often comes in drab neutrals, but there’s no mistaking Cotopaxi when you see it on the hiking trail. The Utah-based brand makes clothes that are vibrant enough to make a vintage Patagonia catalog blush, with clothes and bags in bright oranges, purples, and teals. Despite its sense of fun, Cotopaxi’s gear is designed to perform, and it’s made from hard-wearing, eco-conscious materials.

Cotopaxi’s gear typically comes at a premium, but REI is offering discounts on a variety of its products, including the Teca Half-Zip Windbreaker. Typically $80, the windbreaker is available for $56 in the orange and red colorways. It’s the ideal lightweight layer for warm but windy days and outdoor activities.

The jacket features anorak styling, with a hood, half-zip front, and oversized front pockets. There is a front zip pocket and a kangaroo pocket featuring additional secure storage. The front zip pocket is also the pouch that the jacket packs into, making it an easy-to-carry jacket for active pursuits like hikes and bike rides. It’s also a great option for travel, thanks to the secure storage and easy packability.

A panel on the back vents the jacket if you get too hot, and the elasticated cuffs and hem add insulation when it’s windy. The thin, lightweight fabric is DWR-coated to resist wind and water, keeping you comfortable on temperate but inclement days.

The fabric is made from repurposed polyester taffeta, reducing the environmental impact of the jacket. Cotopaxi is also known for its dedication to social causes, donating a portion of proceeds to effective charities that target global inequality.

Runners and cyclists appreciated the jacket, with one writing that it’s “perfect for running,” and noting that it’s “light and breathable, but with the wind resistance to help keep you out longer on those spring days.” Another wrote, “I bought it primarily to use on chilly bike rides but I have found myself using it day to day.” Hikers appreciated it, too, with one writing that it was “perfect for hiking” a trail that featured “wet drizzly fog.”

Shoppers also found the jacket useful for staying dry in light rain, though the light fabric will not be ideal for heavy downpours. One wrote that they ”tested it in light rain and it was perfect. Totally dry underneath. Great for spring/fall.” Another wrote that the “jacket was perfect for the sudden rain and cold winds without being heavy.”

If you’re in the market for a boldly stylish, versatile layer for hikes, travel, and bike rides, Cotopaxi’s lightweight layer ticks a lot of boxes, and it’s just $56 right now.
