Rick Riordan's bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is coming to Disney+ later this year in a highly anticipated television show. "The wait is over, demigods! I am thrilled to be the first to tell you that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is really, truly, and for sure coming to your screens," Riordan shared in early 2022.

The first book, The Lightening Thief, follows 12-year-old Percy, who finds out he's a demigod—half human, half god—and is sent to Camp Half-Blood, where other children of Olympians go. When Zeus accuses Percy of stealing his lightning bold, Percy and his friends—Grover, a satyr, and Annabeth, another demigod—must travel across America to find it and return it before it's too late. The first two Percy Jackson books were previously feature films starring Logan Lerman as Percy.

"With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about, and we’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humor, surprise, and mystery," Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, said when the series was first announced.

Here's everything we know so far about the Percy Jackson series:

The trio—Percy, Grover, and Annabeth—will be played relative newcomers.

The three main cast members were the first announced:

• Walker Scobell as Percy

• Aryan Simhadri as Grover

• Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth

While the casting was received mainly positively, Riordan condemned the backlash to Annabeth being played by a Black actress, writing, "Leah Jeffries is Annabeth Chase," and calling out the racism in the fandom. "The response to the casting of Leah has been overwhelmingly positive and joyous, as it should be. Leah brings so much energy and enthusiasm to this role, so much of Annabeth’s strength. She will be a role model for new generations of girls who will see in her the kind of hero they want to be," Riordan wrote on his blog. "If you have a problem with this casting, however, take it up with me. You have no one else to blame. Whatever else you take from this post, we should be able to agree that bullying and harassing a child online is inexcusably wrong. As strong as Leah is, as much as we have discussed the potential for this kind of reaction and the intense pressure this role will bring, the negative comments she has received online are out of line. They need to stop. Now."

The gods are played by an all-star cast.

• Toby Stephens as Poseidon (who is also Percy's father in the series)

• Jay Duplass as Hades

• Lin-Manuel Miranda as Hermes

• Timothy Omundson as Hephaestus

• Adam Copeland as Ares

The show premieres December 20, 2023.

Production began in May 2022, and is wrapped in February 2023. "If you’re a fan of the books or even if you just love a good adventure, you are going to love this show. We still have months and months of post-production work to do, but the team is wrapping up in Vancouver with a sense of pride and accomplishment," Riordan wrote on his blog.
