EVERY GREAT COMING-of-age story needs a first chapter that'll pull you in. And while Percy Jackson and the Olympians just finished up a debut season that has largely pleased fans of author Rick Riordan's series of novels and newcomers alike, it remains just that—a first chapter to what those invested seem to recognize as potentially a larger story. But will it get the chance to continue?

Clearly, Season 1 leaves the door open. While some of the story arcs are closed—Percy's mother returns, Poseidon shows up and is able to prevent war with Zeus, and Luke is revealed as a traitor (!) who betrayed Percy—there's still way more to be explored in the future. And, of course, there's plenty more source material from Riordan, whose books have only seen their surface scratched so far.

Disney+ has yet to announce whether or not Percy Jackson and the Olympians will officially return for Season 2. But in the aftermath of the show's Season 1 finale, titled "The Prophecy Comes True," showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz have done interviews with the likes of Variety and The Hollywood Reporter in which they sound pretty certain about getting the opportunity to continue telling this story in a serialized fashion.

"The story hasn’t ended," Steinberg told Variety amid other answers in a post-mortem interview.

Here's what we know about the future of Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Will Percy Jackson and the Olympians Return for Season 2?

While Disney+ hasn't officially renewed Percy Jackson and the Olympians for Season 2, it seems like a pretty sure thing that the story will continue.

In the interview Steinberg and Shotz did with The Hollywood Reporter, they were asked about the fact that the second book in the Percy Jackson series, Sea of Monsters, takes place almost entirely in bodies of water. "Lots of boats," Shotz said, before referencing the duo's past as showrunners for a hit Starz pirate series. "We’re going back to our Black Sails days."

Steinberg alluded to a goal to get to adapt The Last Olympian, the fifth book in the series, in the same interview. "I think it’s hard not to [look to] book five [The Last Olympian]," he said. "All of these stories that are getting new life breathed into them and an opportunity to be brought into this medium to all come crashing together into this giant set piece of a war, and all these characters and these emotional factors intersecting is really exciting."

All of these sorts of quotes sound, despite the fact that the show hasn't officially (or publicly) been picked up, like they are coming from people with direct and immediate plans to continue working on this same project. It would be a shock if Percy Jackson and the Olympians doesn't continue on to Season 2.

Beyond that, it's hard to say with certainty. But Riordan has released six Percy Jackson books to date, with the most recent being The Chalice of the Gods. A seventh installment, Wrath of the Triple Goddess, is planned for a Fall 2024 release. All of these, potentially, could be source material for a season or storyline within the show.
