The popular animated series from the U.K. aired the historical moment in the episode, “Families,” last Tuesday. In the scene, Peppa meets her classmate Penny Polar Bear’s two moms. Then, while drawing a picture of her family, she explains who each member is.

“I live with my mummy and my other mummy. One mummy is a doctor, and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti,” Penny tells Peppa.

In 2019, a petition, with over 23,000 supporters, launched to include a same-sex couple on Peppa Pig.

The petition stated that “children of same-sex parents may feel alienated by Peppa Pig, and that other children may be more likely to bully them, simply through ignorance.”

Some people celebrated the television milestone on social media.

“Peppa Pig has a new character with two moms and people say ‘why.’ Because that’s the reality for some children and representation matters. The end,” @Jane_Doe82 said in a tweet.

“Well what do you know? My kids saw the first same-sex couple on Peppa Pig and the world didn’t end. Penny Polar Bear said she lives with her ‘mummy and her other mummy’ and the four horsemen of the apocalypse didn’t came storming over the horizon to bring humanity to a close,” @simonharris_mbd wrote on Twitter.

Peppa Pig is a global phenomenon as people watch it in over 180 countries and 40 different languages. The hugely popular cartoon isn’t just for kids either — a screenshot of the character’s alleged height spawned a big meme in 2019.
