A BLT has three pillars by definition: the bacon, the lettuce, and the tomato. If you take one of those away, is it really even a sandwich anymore? For those who eat plant-based, making a BLT can seem near-impossible. Take away one of three ingredients and the sandwich gets sad. LT just doesn’t have the same ring. But Gordon Ramsay’s latest TikTok video challenges that idea by making bacon from entirely meatless products.
Not only is it a totally different approach to vegan bacon, but the end result also looks almost identical to the real thing. This is evident from the start of the video, when we teeter back and forth between a shot of real bacon and the vegan bacon.
The recipe has three components: a spice-filled marinade, crumbled tofu, and rice paper. Granulated garlic, nutritional yeast, paprika, maple syrup, soy sauce, vegan butter, and more are whisked together. A few spoonfuls are added to the crumbled tofu to marinade. Then, cut strips of the rice paper are dipped into the same mixture and placed on a prepped baking sheet.
Here comes the magic. A few crumbles of tofu are sprinkled on each strip of paper, covered with another strip and pressed together with your hands. After some time in the oven, the rice paper will get super crispy and crackly with the tofu crumbles acting as the bacon "fat."
After the sandwich is assembled, it looks just like any A+ BLT. And people on the internet are loving it. The video already has 10 million views and two million likes. Plus, the comments are hilarious. “Did...did you just make a bacon out of paper?” “Best looking not bacon I’ve ever seen.” “Genius! Imma have to try.”
This recipe is a reflection of Ramsay’s recent commitment to eating more plant-based. “Getting creative with plant-based is equally as important as cooking fish or meat,” he told Delish in an interview recently.
