People Can’t Get Over How Wild Tiger King on Netflix Is
Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness.
If you spent any amount of time online over the weekend, you probably know at least a little something about Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, the latest (incredibly bonkers) documentary series from Netflix. The show centers on Joe Exotic, a man who owns a big-cat "zoo" in Oklahoma where he employs a very interesting cast of characters, including his two husbands. His archnemesis is a woman named Carole Baskin, who runs Big Cat Rescue and says she wants to save the big cats from those profiting off them—though she's got an extremely complicated story, as well. (A miniseries based on the doc is already in the works, with Kate McKinnon attached to play Carole.)
Joe is accused of hiring someone to kill Baskin, but that's not even close to the strangest part of this seven-part series that also introduces you to other cultlike owners of big-cat parks, takes you inside Joe's gubernatorial campaign, and features some hilarious music videos filmed by Joe, who also fancies himself a country singer.
It is a truly wonderful distraction from the current real-world events, and it's got everyone buzzing on social media. "Anyway if you’re bored go watch Tiger King on Netflix, it’s fucking wild and each time you think 'oh, at least X is normal', surprise, they’re not, they’re all batshit," one person correctly tweeted. "The craziest thing about Tiger King is how quickly the tigers become the most comparatively normal thing in the show," another wrote.
This show really brought out the best reaction GIFs and humor. "Joe Exotic wrote a country ballad about his nemesis Carole Baskin murdering her husband and feeding him to their tigers. I want to be that creatively petty. #TigerKing," a viewer tweeted.
If you haven't watched Tiger King yet, do so immediately. You won't be sorry. We promise.
