People are surprising family by wearing their old wedding dresses, and the videos have us in our feelings

TikTok has unexpectedly become a shining light in our new time of quarantine existence. Not only does it give us a new social feed to scroll through, but it’s also showing us the endless ways people are getting creative while social distancing: from putting advanced spins on “the floor is lava” to recruiting every member of the family to learn some new choreography. One of these new trends, in particular, has been pulling at our heartstrings more than we knew possible. It involves something old (a wedding dress) being used for something new (a TikTok challenge).

So, what is the wedding dress challenge on TikTok?

The wedding dress challenge has TikTok users dusting off their wedding gowns (or in some cases, their mother’s). But of course, there’s more to it than that. The second part of the challenge involves the big reveal. In some cases, former brides put on their old gowns to and surprise their husbands. In that case, we get to see that charming look in the former groom’s eye, just like it was their wedding day all over again. In other cases, daughters are stepping into their mothers’ old gowns and trying the bridal experience on for size.

Then there’s a funny sub-trend of the wedding dress challenge. Some people are just putting on their dresses for household chores—especially taking out the trash.

The TikTok wedding dress challenge is whatever you make of it, but we have to say the reactions are our favorite part.

One user’s mom pulled her gown out of storage for the first time in 25 years. The mother-daughter duo had some fun recreating her wedding day look, down to the makeup and vintage hairdo. After the daughter was all done up, the mom was a mess of happy tears. (Okay, us too.)

Another user’s father had an almost too-perfect response, with his hand over his heart and his mouth gaping open at the sight of his wife in her old wedding dress: “Oh my God, I’m gonna cry. You haven’t changed a bit.”

Other reactions have been less heartwarming, but just as entertaining. One person’s mom used the challenge as a prank rather than a sweet trip down memory lane. She ran down the stairs in her old wedding dress to surprise her ex-husband (who she’s apparently been divorced from for 15 years) and said “You still remember our wedding day?” His response? “Oh God. Where’s my nitroglycerin?”

With all the different interpretations and iterations of this TikTok challenge, there’s one that tops the wedding cake, in our opinion. It’s a video by TikTok user @chesapekoakinshield and it starts with her stepping out in her wedding gown with the words “Came out to show my husband…” on the screen. Then, there’s a quick change of pace. The words switch to “oh wait…I’m divorced!” and suddenly she’s in a mini-dress dancing to “Turn Down for What” and taking a shot. The TikTok ends with her positive message: “Best day of my life!! Find your happiness.” We are so on board with that.
