People Are Sharing a Startling Photo of the U.S. Capitol Building

Are we in the darkest timeline?

As Washington, D.C. reels from attacks on the U.S. Capitol building, photos of the situation are beginning to spread, showcasing just how dark the circumstances are in the nation's capital.

One side-by-side comparison is highlighting a very stark contrast: a photo from today's events alongside President Donald Trump's inauguration. Naturally, the two photos look like a before-and-after from an apocalyptic video game (or prestige television show), though it's very much today's reality. One post has earned more than 35,000 retweets and nearly 100,000 Likes.

Various news outlets have called today's events an insurrection, a coup, and domestic terrorism. During its live broadcast, CNN reminded viewers that British troops managed to break into the United States Capitol back in 1814 during the War of 1812, which means it has been more than 200 years since something like this has happened.

Twitter users compared the photos to a horror film, the end of days, and a summation of the entire Trump administration. Even though the protests stopped today's Electoral College vote, Rep. Nancy Pelosi assured Americans that the process would continue.

"We have decided we should proceed tonight," she announced, adding that Congress would continue when facilities are "cleared for use."
