Part of life is knowing that there are a lot of aspects of it that are out of your control and that you have to accept them or learn to accept them.

And recently, Reddit user u/Frequent-Pilot5243 was curious about that when they asked: "What is a depressing truth you have made peace with?"

The thread quickly went viral with over 37,100 replies. Here are some of the top-voted and best comments:

1."A friendship you thought would last forever can end in an instant."

"My best mate of 20 years said that he didn’t want to be my best man, and just said he didn’t want to be my friend any more. Hurt like hell."

2."Life isn’t fair."

World of Wonder/ VH1

"I hate when people say karma will get that bad person — 9 times out of 10 the asshole gets away with it.

Life is unfair."

3."You can do everything perfectly and still fail completely."

Captain Picard saying, "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose"
Paramount Television

4."Sometimes people you care deeply about will choose to drop out of your life, and all you can really do is have the grace to let them."

"This is elegant. I’m dealing with this right now. Part of me wants to revive our past relationship and constantly attempt to interact with them. But dignity and maturity dictate that it’s time to quit. At least I still have my memories!"

5."My grandpa just wanted to get to know me and the man I was becoming during his last year of life. Which I was too young and too selfish to realize."

"Yeah, this hits home. I spent 90% of my childhood with my grandparents. I was at their house almost every day. When I got into my teens and obviously found friends, discovered women, all that stuff, I just stopped seeing them. They’re both gone now, and they died with the memories of me as a child. Although they saw me sometimes while I was older, they didn’t know me because I didn’t give them the chance."

6."That at the end of the day, the only one I can rely on is myself."

7."I'm aging nonstop."

"I’m in my mid-30s, and lately this has hit me like a ton of bricks.

I no longer feel like I have an endless amount of time. On the one hand it’s scary, but on the other hand it’s motivating me to get shit done now. Because in four years or so I’ll be 40. Then next thing it’s 50. Then next thing it’s 60 and your body is starting to break down. Then you’re 80 and basically on death's doorstep.

Time to chase those dreams, boys and girls!"—billybingoball

8."Just because you think someone is 'the one,' it doesn't mean they think you are."

9."I’m a coward, and it’s costing me."

"I’m a coward because I’m afraid of change; I’m afraid to fail and to hurt people; I’m afraid my dreams make me selfish and that I’ll step on people who are just like me if I try to pursue them. Yes, I am afraid to ask people out, and I’m afraid that someday I’ll realize that they might have been the one."

"Don’t have the courage to do what I KNOW is the right thing for me. Ughhh!"

10."I find it more comforting than depressing, but some people will see it as the opposite. I'm entirely fine with being in no relationship. It's been almost a decade since the last one, and I just don't see it as the priority that others do. I'm entirely fine with just having friends and colleagues. Hell, I'm happy. I just wanna toss it out there because some people might find my reasoning to be helpful in deciding their life priorities."

A woman smiling with the words, "I'm single by choice"

11."I'm likely destined for an average life."

"Being a kid is always thinking you are the main character destined for great things.

Growing up is realizing you are a background extra in a single filler episode...if you are lucky."

12."True friends are extremely rare, especially as an adult."

13."The world doesn’t care if you’re a good person. Matter of fact, they’re preying on good people."

14."No matter how wrong somebody has done you, you’re not owed or entitled to an apology, acknowledgement, or 'closure.' You just move the fuck on and learn from the shit."

NBC/ Warner Bros. Television

"It’s the worst feeling in the world. I felt that way about my ex. I went through the stages of wanting an apology or at least an acknowledgment that he fucked up and hurt me to I hope you get what’s coming to you. Over time I realized the best 'revenge' is just to live life knowing you’re better off in the end and better will come."

15."I hate my job, but currently I'm really not in a situation where I can leave or get another job."

20th Century Fox

16."No matter how hard I try, I will always be an adult, and nothing will return me to a childlike state of innocence, irresponsibility, and wonder."

17."The Curiosity rover was programmed to sing happy birthday to itself while alone on Mars. 😕"

NASA / Via

"The first time I read that I actually cried. I'm not a crier, as a rule, but I felt a wave of being so alone, so cold, so far from home."—yankonapc

18."Nobody will be quite as passionate about the things I am passionate about."

Apple Music

19."That real talent, imagination, and absolute commitment does not always translate to success."

The Hollywood Reporter

20."I'm kinda dumb, TBH."

World Of Wonder

"I often feel really dumb and incapable of things. I guess it's a healthy maturing awareness of my own limitations, but I still thought I would be more than I am."—Testerline

And finally...

21."Being alive is expensive."
