People Are Shaming Emily Ratajkowski For Going Braless During the Kavanaugh Protests

As we await the confirmation to see if Judge Brett Kavanaugh — who’s been accused of sexual assault by three women including Dr. Christine Blasey Ford — will be appointed to the Supreme Court, women across the country are rising up to make their voices heard. On Thursday, model Emily Ratajkowski took to Twitter to say that she had joined the protests against him but had been arrested in the process. In the photo accompanying the post, she can be seen holding a protest sign and wearing a white tank top without a bra. Instead of noticing the sign or discussing the issue, however, some people in her comments decided to discuss her body instead.

One person told Emily to “put on a bra” while another person asked, “Why no bra tho?” Clearly, focusing on her apparel completely misses the point and glosses over the severity of the situation. And Emily isn’t the first to be targeted in this way — last week, Alyssa Milano was targeted for what she decided to wear to hear Dr. Blasey Ford’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Critics expressed their feelings about Alyssa’s clothing on Twitter, calling the outfit — a striped black dress with ruffle detailing and a matching belt — inappropriate and too revealing. One person even said that her cleavage was “disrespectful.”

While the #FreeTheNipple movement has empowered more women to ditch bras if they don’t feel like wearing them, we still have some work to do when it comes to policing women’s bodies. At the end of the day, going braless shouldn’t have anything to do with Emily’s right to protest. Making the conversation about her body instead of the issue — Kavanaugh’s nomination and the serious allegations that have been leveled against him — does far more harm than good.
