People Are Petitioning to Replace Confederate Statues in Louisiana with Monuments of Britney Spears
As protestors across the country are calling for the removal of confederate monuments and other racially-insensitive memorials in the south amid the Black Lives Matter movement, petitioners in Louisiana already know what they'd like to put in their place: monuments of Britney Spears.
A new petition addressed to John Bel Edwards, the governor of Louisiana, and several state representatives, is requesting for the historic memorials to be swapped out with ones of the pop star. "Before becoming one of the world's most important and influential pop legends, Britney Spears was living life in a small southern town by the name of Kentwood, Louisiana," the petition reads, adding that she's an inspiration to millions.
By Sunday morning, more than 20,000 people signed the Change.Org petition, which lists the "many" contributions Spears has made to her home state, including her Hurricane Katrina fundraising efforts, a $250,000 donation to Louisiana flood victims in 2016, and her contribution to a state fund for school supplies.
Meanwhile, supporters of the petition listed their own reasons for signing. "She is the TRUE hero of the South!" wrote one user, while another commented: "Britney has brought a lot of love and money to the state of Louisiana. Let us celebrate that, not slave owners."

The petition's final plea to government officials, reads: "Do the right thing: Replace the Confederate statues with an actual Louisiana hero and influential human being, Britney Spears."
Over the weekend, protestors in New Orleans dismantled the bust of slave owner John McDonogh and tossed it into the Mississippi River, and there's a push to rename streets, buildings, and parks that honor Confederate leaders in the city.
