People Are Not Taking Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan's Breakup Well
Last night Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum threw everyone for a loop when they announced that they're separating after nearly nine years of marriage. "Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now," they said in a joint statement, hopefully preventing tabloids from dreaming up salacious rumors about why this breakup happened (though, let's be real, that probably won't happen).
Social media users are devastated by this, to say the least. It's understandable why: Channing and Jenna have been a part of pop-culture fabric, especially for early-aughts teens and young adults. Anyone who was obsessed with Step Up, which is where Jenna and Channing met, probably translated that love for the movie to their offscreen relationship. Becoming attached to celebrity couples is a strange phenomenon because many of us don't know these people personally, but it exists nonetheless—for better or worse.
And last night it was definitely for "worse." The amount of tears people are shedding for the end of Channing and Jenna is at a high point, and the emotion is showing no signs of slowing down. Of course, Twitter users are splashing the stereotypical "love is dead" mantra everywhere, but they're also urging their other favorite celeb couples—like Chrissy Teigen and John Legend and Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds—to stay together as well. The melodramatics here are pretty hysterical, but they're also real as hell. I, too, am surprised by Jenna and Channing's breakup, and there's no shame in that.
