  • George W. Bush painted two photos of his grandson Hal as a gift to Jenna Bush Hager.

  • The Today star said the sweet paintings were her favorite Christmas gifts.

  • Handmade gifts are a tradition in the Bush-Hager family.

Jenna Bush Hager’s favorite Christmas gift was the one that probably cost the least: two hand-painted photos of her youngest child Henry Harold “Hal” Hager. The artist behind the sweet gesture? Her father, former U.S. President George W. Bush.

“My Hal painted by his Jefe,” the Today host shared in an Instagram post. “@georgewbush Love how you see our precious boy. These bring me joy.”

People flooded the comments with appreciation for his thoughtful work. “Wow! The best gifts are the homemade ones,” one person wrote. “I’m so tickled that he signs his paintings ‘43’” another added.

Apparently, homemade Christmas gifts are very much a tradition in the Bush-Hager family. Jenna previously opened up about Barbara Bush’s needlepointed Christmas stockings, which she made for each of her great-grandkids before she passed away in 2018.

Jenna shared that her “Ganny” left several of these stockings for all of her great-grandchildren, including Baby Hal. “What a beautiful thing she did so that all three of my kids could have that,” she said. “[Hal] will never have met her, but they’re so ingrained, literally in this case, in the fabric of our family.”

Although all of Jenna’s grandparents are gone, she keeps their legacies alive. “Hal’s the first baby who won’t get to meet these people that were such an important part of my life,” she said. “But I also know that through my grandparents’ letters and their stories and the ways they raised us, he’ll get to know them.”
