People Keep Analyzing Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Behavior at Archie’s Christening

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had a christening for their son, Archie, over the weekend, and it was beautiful. Markle wore a chic Dior dress for the occasion, Prince Harry's signature bracelets were on full display, and everyone appeared to be in good spirits. That didn't stop people from looking for drama: Many royals followers have a lot of opinions about the faces of Prince William and Kate Middleton in the official portraits from the christening. "William looks so sour in the face," one fan wrote, while another posted, "Kate doesn't have a real smile on her face. She looks pained."

Now this line of thinking has expanded beyond the comments section. A quick Google search turns up headlines like "Prince William and Kate Middleton Look Miserable at Archie's Baptism" and "Kate Middleton and Prince William Look Tense at Meghan Markle's Baby Christening."

And here are some more reactions on Twitter from fans:

A body language expert, Judi James, has also chimed in about the demeanors of Prince William and Middleton in the christening photo. "With a very relaxed and jolly-looking Camilla down one end of this pose, Kate sits at the other looking oddly self-diminished and prim, with her arms pulled into her torso and a part-smile on her face," she told the Daily Mail. "Given all the rift rumours the rather 'ready to flee' tension in her pose could be seen as awkwardness."

In short, royal fans and tabloids alike are fueling the idea there is, indeed, a Sussex-Cambridge feud and that Prince William and Kate Middleton didn't want to attend Archie's christening. Rumors of a rift between the royal "Fab Four" have existed for a while now, and they were exacerbated a few weeks ago when the Cambridges (Will and Kate) formally split from the Sussexes (Harry and Meghan) on the organizational level. This was just a step the couples took so they could focus on separate professional affairs—but led to stories of something else brimming under the surface.

The whole thing is rubbish, in my opinion. Kate's smile in this christening photo looks no different than how she's appeared in other similar shoots. The Daily Mail's body language expert even backed this up, adding that her pose could just be a case of her wanting to "lower her own status signals and not upstage the happy couple."

And if Prince William seems "sour" in the picture, it probably has nothing to do with his feelings toward his brother. Maybe he's tired. Maybe he's hungry. Maybe he's annoyed because he'd rather be watching Love Island on his couch than posing for photos. Wouldn't we all?

At the end of the day, none of us knows the real story behind Harry, William, Meghan, and Kate's relationship—but to suggest that the Cambridges were miserable during Archie's christening seems like a stretch. They're adults. While they probably weren't thrilled about spending the day taking stuffy photos with their in-laws, they know it's a part of the gig. Even the closest of siblings would find posing for formal portraits together all day annoying.

And furthermore, royals expert told Katie Nicholl told Glamour a few months back that reports of a feud between the couples is overblown. "I do think there is some truth to there having been some tension—not just between the duchesses but between the dukes, as well," she said. "As we all know, things can gather momentum pretty quickly. So while I think there's been tension, I don't believe there has been some feud."
