An ominous shelf cloud appeared over an Italian seaside on Monday, and it’s making people wonder about the end of the world.

Rob Barke, a resident of the city of Pescara, was one of many who took to Facebook to post photos and video of the weather phenomenon that took place earlier in the week. And although it looks like it could do major damage, the low-hanging cloud apparently only brought temporary cold temperatures, hail and wind, prompting Barke to call it “both incredible and a little scary.”

Still, a Facebook page attributed to the town center aggregated other photos from residents, getting people talking about the scarier side of the storm, and how much it looked like a scene from the sci-fi film Independence Day.

“Call Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, they already know what to do,” someone wrote in reference to the 1996 movie. “Looks like the end of the world,” another said.

Others said that the phenomenon was a “disturbing” reminder of climate change.

“The more we move forward, the worse it will be if we don’t lower the global temperature,” a commenter wrote.

Overall, people were happy that they were able to remain safe despite the terrifying scene. And glad to see it dissipate in the days since.
