People Are Falling in Love with Amanda Gorman After Her Inauguration Poem

From the line delivery to the coat and the headband.

Inauguration Day brought about some historic firsts, including Kamala Harris being sworn in as the first female Vice President of the United States, as well as the first Black and South Asian-American V.P.

And while it was Harris and Biden's big day, amid the ceremony, another star emerged: Amanda Gorman. Gorman, a 22-year-old poet, made history as the youngest inaugural poet as she took to the stage to recite her original composition, "The Hill We Climb," at the Capitol.

Soon enough, Gorman's poem, her delivery, and her stunning outfit (the colors! that coat!) garnered a fanbase all her own as people watching from all over fell in love with her and her work.

Speaking to CBS News ahead of the event, Gorman said, "It's amazing...Especially at my age. No one really gets to say, 'At 22, I am the inaugural poet.'"

Gorman said she took inspiration from the speeches of Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as she began writing, but was ultimately galvanized by the attack on Capitol Hill earlier this month.

"On the Wednesday in which we saw the insurrection at the Capitol, that was the day that the poem really came to life. And I really put pedal to the metal," she said.

"In my poem, I'm not going to in any way gloss over what we've seen over the past few weeks and, dare I say, the past few years. But what I really aspire to do in the poem is to be able to use my words to envision a way in which our country can still come together and can still heal," Gorman said in an interview with New York Times. "It's doing that in a way that is not erasing or neglecting the harsh truths I think America needs to reconcile with."
