People are duping Pottery Barn gingerbread houses with $5 thrift store flip: ‘Wait, this is genius’

Rather than spending $40 to $50 for a Pottery Barn gingerbread house, TikTokers are opting to go the DIY route for a fraction of the price, all with the help of thrifted Christmas village houses.

However, some vintage collectors aren’t thrilled by the thrift store flip, claiming the DIYers are ruining valuable pieces from Christmas past.

Regardless, lovers of all things thrifted are turning their $5 finds into stylish modern-day dupes, and the results are gaining viral attention.

One such DIYer, Stephanie (@casawatkinsblo), gained over 557,000 views, 72,000 likes and 14,000 saves when she revealed how a can of “Warm Caramel” Rustoleum paint and a white Sharpie pen can create a Pottery Barn-inspired gingerbread village.

Instead of spending $40 on a single Pottery Barn gingerbread house, Stephanie was able to create an entire village of six houses for the same price.

And, as Stephanie explains in a follow-up comment, because all the houses will end up the same color/design, thrifters can use a variety of house styles while still creating a cohesive look.

While many viewers lauded the DIY dupe — “FINALLY!! I’ve been waiting for some type of dupe!!! Thank you for sharing this!!” commented user @jennafordie — others cried foul.

“Some of these are Dept 56 houses 😭 collectors items,” wrote @chloesage5, referring to Department 56, a company that specializes in hand-painted ceramic buildings and figurines.

“Noooo not the Dep 56! My mom had those when I was little and now I’m trying to collect them all again!” commented @mayyngo5.

To this, Stephanie replied, “I can understand sentimental value. The idea is for those looking for ways to use them not collect. … People that value them as collectors are fine by me, but I value the makeover. I can respect collectors, but I’m not one of them.”

But Stephanie isn’t the only one turning thrifted finds into DIY dupes.

Melaine Thompson (@mysweetsavannah) also gained hundreds of thousands of views when she shared her take on the Pottery Barn craft — this time employing white hot glue to give her gingerbread trim a 3D effect.

Much like Stephanie’s video, Thompson’s DIY tutorial gained a mixed reaction from viewers.

“Wait, this is genius I’m totally doing this,” commented @sarahannfm.

“Are those department 56?! I think they may have been worth a lot of money,” wrote @mamashannonq.

“This is cute but as someone who collects the dickens village I’m HURTING,” commented @morganbarry4.

But not all Pottery Barn dupes stir up such controversy.

Christina Clerz (@flipdaddie) gained over 3 million views when she duped Pottery Barn’s $179 stacked jack-o’-lanterns for a little over $5, all with the help of Five Below and black and gold spray paint.

While some have commented that Clerz’s finished product isn’t an exact look-alike — “The pottery barn ones looks cuter tho,” commented @clubtragics — others are thankful for the much cheaper option.

“pottery barn is wild with their prices,” commented @rockinllamaco.

With the hashtag #potterybarndupe boasting over 56.6 million views, it’s clear there’s a desire for holiday decor that doesn’t break the proverbial bank.

TikTok is coming for pottery barns neck, love these [dupe] videos,” wrote @naturyl_shannon.
