People Are Criticizing Ivanka Trump for Posting a ‘Challenge Accepted’ Pic to Instagram

Ivanka Trump is the latest public figure to take part in the Challenge Accepted trend that’s been sweeping Instagram over the past few days.

In case you missed it (or had no idea why your feed was flooded with black-and-white selfies of women), the “challenge” is purportedly about female empowerment and women supporting women, though many have criticized it for being performative and lacking any real substance. There were also claims that the 2020 trend originated in Turkey as a call for women’s rights, but New York Times journalist Taylor Lorenz debunked that theory, noting that different forms of “challenge accepted” have been around since 2016.

Regardless of the trend’s origins, Trump’s post was criticized, given her role in her father’s administration and its policies on women’s issues

#ChallengeAccepted. Gratitude for the sisterhood—the women who have held me up and pushed me forward! ❤️ Each day brings countless opportunities, large and small, to spread light and uplift those around us. Let’s be kind to each other. Let’s choose to love, support and strengthen one another. We are ALL mothers—we each bring something unique and beautiful into this world. Let’s ❤️each other. I challenge all of my followers to lead with love. You create the future as you live. #womensupportingwomen,” she wrote, alongside a black-and-white photo of herself during one of her pregnancies.

Below, just some of the tweets criticizing Trump for her post (her sentiment about “all” women being mothers has also caught heat)

Will Ivanka Trump’s participation finally put an end to Challenge Accepted? We shall see. But if it doesn’t and you feel compelled to participate, follow your post up with an actionable item that actually helps support women. Sign a petition, donate, bring awareness to accounts that people should follow, or encourage your friends to register to vote. Giving this challenge actual substance might help make it less polarizing.
