Billie Eilish And Rosalía Are (Rightfully) Facing Backlash After Winning The Best Latin VMA Award

In case you missed it, the MTV Video Music Awards took place last night — and there's nothing that quite says VMAs like controversy. This time around, Billie Eilish and Rosalía are facing backlash for winning the Best Latin award for their song, "Lo Vas A Olvidar."
The category was full of competition from Latin superstars and their hit tracks — including Shakira and Black Eyed Peas' "Girl Like Me"; Maluma's "Hawái"; Karol G's "Bichota"; J Balvin, Dua Lipa, Bad Bunny, and Tainy's "Un Dia (One Day)"; and Bad Bunny and Jhay Cortez's "Dákiti."
So, people (rightfully) felt a certain type of way when the winners of the category were non–Latin American women (Billie is of Irish and Scottish descent, while Rosalía is Spanish).
Some commented that the win felt like an "insult":
the fact that Billie Eilish and Rosalia won best Latin at the #vma feels like an insult
Others made reaction memes, because what else can you do when a blatantly unjust decision is made:
rosalia and billie winning best latin winner knowing damn well they are two white women
rosalia & billie eillish after winning best latin award
And it's important to note that the VMAs are decided by fans, which some people were quick to point out:
Two white women won the Latin award. Y’all did this. Por estar en coro. I can show y’all freedom but y’all won’t like it https://t.co/WMwyYcutgf
