Two days ago, the New York Times announced that the world-famous Copenhagen restaurant Noma would be closing. The fine-dining institution, which Chef René Redzepi said is shuttering because its model is “no longer sustainable,” featured a $500+ tasting menu featuring dishes made with locally sourced game meat, wild berries, mushrooms, and, famously, reindeer penis.

And now folks on social media are having a field day with the news. Some of the most out-there but hilarious commentary is coming from people jokingly saying that the film The Menu had something to do with Noma’s closing.

In case you missed it, The Menu is a horror film about food-obsessed people who travel to a remote island to indulge in an expensive tasting menu prepared by a famous chef. It’s a satire about the restaurant industry and foodie culture, and there are plenty of twists and turns throughout.

Also full of twists and turns? The conspiratorial tweets connecting the film to Noma closing.

“Noma is closing because it’s [sic] labor practices are unsustainable and now I’m down a hole, furiously researching whether The Menu went into production before or after this happened,” one user tweeted.

There are even some people on Twitter who are feeling rather “prophetic” after watching The Menu.

Also, if you’re hoping to let loose your own expertly crafted joke about Noma and The Menu, you might want to do it soon.

Good news if you want to try the lauded restaurant’s food but a trip to Copenhagen isn’t in the cards before it closes in 2024: Noma plans to transition to a full-time culinary laboratory.
