People Are Royally Hacked Off Over This “Sexist” Calvin Klein Ad

We all know that Calvin Klein releases a multitude of adverts featuring scantily clad models and celebrities, but has the brand taken a sexist turn with a recent billboard campaign?

The billboard in question was put up in Soho, New York City, as part of the brand’s SS16 campaign - the same campaign that stars Justin Bieber in his tighty whiteys and Kendall Jenner in a skimpy bra and matching knickers.

But it’s this particular billboard that’s caused uproar, because it places actress Klara Kristen in her Calvin’s with the text “I seduce in #mycalvins”, directly alongside male rapper Fetty Wap with the text “I make money in #mycalvins”. You can see why people are annoyed.

One woman has found the billboard so offensive that she’s taken to Change.org to launch a petition for the brand to remove the ad.

Heidi Zak of underwear brand Third Love is asking people to support her push to get the advert taken down, writing on her petition that it “propagates an archaic and offensive gender stereotype that women are nothing more than sexual objects.”

She writes: “Is the message of Calvin Klein that women are only good for seduction? Are we stuck in the 1950s? Are these the values of the Calvin Klein brand?

“We believe women can do anything, and that we should take every possible opportunity to teach and remind all women of that. Anything less, in this day and age, is irresponsible marketing.”

The billboard has now been removed, but the brand refuses to admit that they took it down because of the campaign. Instead, a representative told Racked that it’s gone “as part of the planned rotation of our Spring 2016 advertising campaign.”
